柔道家。アトランタ・シドニー・アテネオリンピック、柔道60kg級金メダリスト（3連覇）。

アトランタオリンピック、シドニーオリンピックで2連覇を達成。2年のブランクを経てアテネオリンピック代表権を獲得し、2004年アテネオリンピックで柔道史上初、また全競技を通じてアジア人初となるオリンピック3連覇を達成する。2015年8月29日、全日本実業柔道個人選手権大会を最後に、40歳で現役を引退。国内外にて、柔道の普及活動を展開。
また、テレビでのキャスターやコメンテイターとしても活躍。自身の柔道経験を元に講演活動も多数行い、全国を飛び回っている。

Nomura won two consecutive gold medals at the Atlanta and Sydney Olympics. He put his judo career on hold for 2 years but qualified for the Athens Olympics in 2004 and became the first judoka, and also the first Asian athlete in any competition, to win gold medals in 3 consecutive Olympics. On August 29 2015, he retired from competitive judo at the age of 40 after competing in the All-Japan Businessmen Judo Individual Championships. Nomura currently travels and promotes judo in Japan and overseas. He enjoys a successful career as a sports news commentator and motivational speaker.
